Quest for the Elevator Speech
Published by Carin May 24th, 2007 in General, Avo reinvents itself (again)
Okay Avos, so after our meeting on Tuesday, we have all been challenged to come up with one line that best describes us - our elusive ‘Elevator Speech’.
Here is the list of words that we wanted to use, so the challenge is to take these words (some, not all!) and make a one-liner out of them that best describes what we do, and how we do it.
Remember that the end date for the challenge is Thurs 31st May.
Words and Phrases:
Communication. Humour. Connecting. Business.
Conversations. Guacomole. Authentic. Soft Skills.
Fresh. Genuine. Open. Magical. Caring. Creative.
Passionate. Unique. ‘Fun with intent’. People. Real.
‘A symphony out of single notes’. Talking.
‘Work better together’. ‘It’s not what we do, it’s how we do it’
What we didn’t want to say/be/do:
Flaky. Corporate. Use ‘buzz’ words. Be ‘over-funky’. Stereotyped.
Be ‘just another training company’. Try to avoid ‘multi-syllable words’.
Go forth Avos, and find us a winner!
Purpose
Building and delivering training solutions that empower people with skills and insight to make better choices and live bigger lives. Being brave enough to take on the challenges at a scale that makes a significant impact in SA and beyond

I don’t know how a couple of words can capture our essence. I keep thinking ‘metaphor’…but that’s dangerous if you are not a poet. When I speak about avo, I find myself talking about ‘growing people’. I think of sowing new skill seeds into people’s lives. I think of those delegates, who like bulbs, just need spring rain and suddenly, what was there already is birthed: there are hosts of golden daffodils, beside the lake, beneath the trees, fluttering and dancing in the breeze…ok ok I am getting seriously carried away now (thanks Wordsworth). Let’s face it: our name almost always evokes a conversation. “Err no, we are not a restaurant. We are a soft skills training company.” The story about the avo tree is magnificent and captures our essence completely. Good luck avo’s. Looking forward to reading your responses.
Tracy, you are such a magical creature! What beautiful words you have found there!
How about some of this: “We have great converstations with people in a soft skill training environement that helps them grow skill and confidence when connecting with people” or
“We are a soft skills training company that work on interpersonal communication skills much like many other companies out there, but its not what we do its how we go about it. We’re fresh, genuine, caring and creative and we have a great time talking to people about having real, confident conversations at work.”
or
“We have wonderful conversations with people about interpersonal communication and how to be confident and effective at work. It’s really a bit like making guacomole the fundamatal ingredients are always the same its just having the confidence to mix it differently that creates a magical outcome”
This is mine: “We help all kinds of people connect better by teaching them how to say what they mean, mean what they say and really listen to each other. It makes good business sense to learn these skills.”
I’m thinking something sweet, short and to the point, like…:
We help create magic conversations, or, We bring the magic into conversation, or, We bring freshness to interpersonal magic, or We are interpersonal magic-makers…
Yes, no. maybe? Ponder ponder ponder… .
I have been on your site a number of times and really enjoy what I see!!! You seem like such a dynamic team and would love one day to be part of the Guacomole….. so I was practicing my elevator pitch…. for you and here it is…
We are a unique Soft Skills company with a fresh approach, a passionate fun-loving team of authentic individuals committed to having genuine conversations together with you around taking your business to the next level of creation. We are the jalapeno in the Guacomole.

Hey, jalapeno - what a lovely rendition of who we are - you’re definitely a good ingredient of the guacomale mix!
We’re bursting at the seams at the moment - we have just take on our brand new training manager, Vanessa, a new finance person, Tsepho, and a training person, project resource, Patricia, so Elaine has been very strict with me about cooling it on bringing new friends into the Avo space:)
Keep in touch, though - you never know what comes up!
