Update on Grant…
Published by yojules March 4th, 2009 in General
Avos, Avo clients and friends alike have been following the Grant health saga for a while. He’s being having weird ‘wobbles’, going pale and struggling with heart pain and hectic headaches for the past few years. He’s been to all sorts of health practitioners over time and had opinions that range from ‘low blood sugar’ to ‘arrhythmia - needing pacemaker’.
But thanks to a very gifted and intuitive cardiologist, we have finally found the condition: Pheochromocytoma. That’s a very big word describing a rare tumour that has been growing in his adrenal gland for years. It causes the gland to pump a potent cocktail of peformance-enhancing chemicals into his bloodstream, completely explaining his lean and gorgeous bod, and his ants-in-pants behaviour! Sadly, it also spikes his blood pressure to life-threatening levels, and sends his heart into weird contortions, making his life quite miserable at times….!
So we are now on the ‘fixit’ trail. The tumour has to come out ASAP. Surgery is risky, but necessary. He’s on drugs now to try manage the blood pressure to the point where it is safe to operate, which should be in early April. As one of our key resources, it will be tough to run Avo in the short term, but we’ll do our best to manage around that until he is strong enough to get back into the training room.
Thanks to all of you who have supported Grant, me, and our family through this tough time. Your love, prayers and support remind me of how very special it is to be part of the Avo family!

Grant, you are a strong man so I have no doubt that you will be fine throughout this saga and you will emerge stronger than before. Without doubt you have the support of the Avo family. Get well soon.
Grant and Jules, know that my prayers and thoughts are with you and your family. You both bring so much light and life to people’s lives - may it come back to you one hundred fold.
Grant and Jules,
Strength to you both. I know it is a really tough time, when fears and anxieties come into play and we start struggling with life, the meaning of it and whether we have lived as we should have. Maybe we should have been less involved with work and more involved at home, or maybe we should not have pushed as hard and paid more attention to our health. Still I think what is important is that we acknowlege that we did the best we could at the time. And more than that, whatever we go through we are meant to go through it. Its’ not always about teaching us a lesson restrospectively as in that we did something wrong but it is often about teaching us about another way to live proactively.I think we all often dont live to enjoy life , we trundle anlong doing what we must, fighting to bring in the bread and butter…and then something happens and we wonder is this truly what were meant to do.
As my coach said to me in the great divorce, you are being given a second chance to live…TRULY LIVE…and darling Grant maybe that camp on the banks on the Vaal is beckoning…I keep thinking of you in that space sorry Jules, and sorry Avo.
Till my dream for you happens understand that you will be ok, this is a hurdle its hard and tough and draining. But you two in your marriage have all that you need to be supportive and loving and to get through this beaming on the otherside. So from me, my prayers, love and joty go with you…always.
And on a practical note…shout I am down the road if you need me.
Grant and Jules and wonderful boys. You are a great family with strong ethics and values. I trust that you will all be held by Gods great love at this time.
Grant you have so much to offer us all, and you give of yourself wholeheatedly in your work, it is time to rest and take back what you have given.
We pray for a speedy recovery and the best news after the surgery.
LOL Sandi Gary and Laim
I know, like I know, like I know..that you will get through this. Jules and the boys, be strong for dad and we have all of you in our prayers!
This certainly is a trying moment for you but I want to admonish you to have faith in God. This is like a storm and i believe you don’t have to tell God how big your storm is but rather tell the storm how big your God is, so just relax and know that the storm is already over. Your faith in the feeling of God will carry you through. God the giver of life and great provider will sustain you. We are praying for you.
Grant and Jules we are praying for you both very much. I know that God has already been faithful in hearing our prayers. We will continue to pray and trust Jesus Christ to heal you.
You guys are an inspiration! Your magnimonious support, love and generosity throughout your toughest challenge is quite something.
Know that you are loved and that you have a whole FLEET of people who wish they could do something to make your path easier as you have done for us.
So, call on us - guilt free!
Thinking of you, sending angels and praying for you all the time.
