South Africa has been producing some alarmingly low literacy and numeracy skill levels out of its education system, and there have been very public debates on how to impact this trend positively. In a parallel conversation, the economic crisis has propelled financially vulnerable people into horrible financial circumstances: in South Africa at present 66 000 people are going into debt counselling per month.

Skills Portal has featured a new blog by Jules which talks about South Africa’s trends in decreasing literacy levels, primarily financial literacy.

Your work is everything related to your job, be it projects, meetings, admin or deadlines. We all know that work takes up a huge chunk of our time, but what about your life? Family, friends, recreation or sports. These are fundamentally important, but often sit on the back-burner so you can accomplish your responsibilities at work.

If someone were to ask you if you were in a harmonious balance with work and life, what would you say?

Jules’ new article published in the Star Workplace talks about just that, your work-life balance.

The latest official figure is that we have trained 701 business owners since December!!

Tutuwa is focusing on delivering unsecured micro enterprise loans into this market, and we are delivering the supporting training that helps these guys lift their performance game. They learn more about the role of funding in building businesses, financial literacy, and basic business management skills that should build a whole string of excited AHA’s.

Hanli and her Greenhouse team will soon be interrogating all the learning from this pilot so we can build a brilliant offering in our market: how effective is the content and methodology we have designed? How well have we prepared our trainers? What impact will it have on Tutuwa’s ability to manage risk in the lending space? How does the combination of training and funding coming at a similar time in the life of a Micro Enterprise generate value for that business owner?

It’s a hugely exciting piece of work for us, and we are all very committed to making it an effective and impactful contribution to the economy of our country.
