Exploration of future projects and prototypes for fostering deeper connectivity and collaboration within environmental organisations was in the spotlight at the recent Project Biome conference, attended by Avo Vision.
Avo Vision, a strategic partner of the IDC-funded Social Employment Fund (SEF), has been instrumental in kick-starting Project Biome’s efforts in Mpumalanga. Matthew Purkis, a representative from Project Biome, shared, “Without the SEF programme, our efforts would not have even begun.”
The conference, held under the theme ‘Re-Wilding’ in April at Magaliesburg, celebrated Avo Vision’s outstanding work in the environmental sector, acknowledging its support in the Mpumalanga Land Restoration project located in the Sudwala Rainforest Valley.
SEF and Project Biome have achieved significant milestones in Mpumalanga, recruiting 86 previously unemployed individuals to work within the agricultural and green business sectors. These individuals have cleared 15.6 hectares of bushes, repurposing alien species to produce charcoal.
Through Avo’s Green Business Value Chain, 1204 hectares of alien species have been cleared across five provinces, restoring 472 million litres of water annually in the Eastern Cape. Thapelo Moloi, Avo Vision’s Enterprise Development Manager, emphasized, “We need to be intentional about sustainability and building environmentally friendly business models.”
Project Biome continues to support businesses with equipment and training while looking into initiatives such as eco-bricks and earthworm composting. By May 2024, the programme had employed 803 job seekers, empowering them to support their families.
